Climavore - Sea Shell Terrazzo Short Film
Creation of a short film to document the process, production and events for CLIMAVORE . This film is for the Design museum, London. opening exhibition 16/11/2023
From Climavore:-
"𝗦𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗱𝗲𝘀
We have been very busy preparing seashell terrazzo for upcoming projects on the Isle of Skye, whilst increasing production of our shell-based lime within a purpose-built lime kiln. We are very excited about the lime we are getting from waste seashells - it is strong, very crisp, and working better than ever within our terrazzo mix.
Whilst shells were used for lime and building for millennia, we do not know of anyone else in the UK making large quantities of shell-based lime. Instead, the lime used in most commercial projects is from mined rock. All of these shells are collected as food waste from CLIMAVORE-affiliated restaurants in the Isle of Skye: redirecting waste streams into new building materials that provide alternatives to extractive production. After three years of development, it is amazing to be producing lime at scale, under the guidance of lime-expert-extraordinaire, our collaborator Skye Stone Studio (Joel Franklyn)
We are delighted to announce that over 300 waste shell terrazzo tiles, bonded with our seashell-lime and assembled into a large mural, are on display in the Future Observatories exhibition which opens today in the Design Museum."
